Your First Osteopathy Visit
Know what to expect before your first appointment.
Trying something new is easier when you know what the appointment will look like. Your first osteopathy visit is focused on understanding your concerns, assessing how you move and determining whether osteopathic manual therapy is appropriate for you.

Before we begin
Your first visit starts with a conversation.
Your symptoms are only one part of the picture. Your health history, daily activities, previous injuries and goals all provide useful context.
You'll have an opportunity to explain what brought you in, how long you've experienced the issue and what makes your symptoms better or worse.
You may also be asked about previous injuries, surgeries, medical conditions, medications, work demands, exercise and other factors relevant to your care.
What to expect
Your first osteopathy appointment, step by step.
A first visit generally includes a conversation, assessment, appropriate treatment and discussion of next steps.
1. Discuss Your Health History
Discuss your current concern, symptoms, previous injuries, health history, daily activities and goals.
2. Movement & Physical Assessment
You may be asked to perform simple movements while mobility and relevant movement patterns are assessed.
3. Hands-On Assessment
Hands-on assessment may help the practitioner understand how joints, muscles, connective tissues and different regions are moving.
4. Osteopathic Manual Treatment
If appropriate, hands-on techniques are selected according to your assessment, comfort and goals.
5. Discuss the Plan
You'll discuss relevant findings, recommendations and whether follow-up care or another healthcare assessment may be appropriate.
Preparing for your appointment
What should you wear?
Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily during the assessment.
Depending on the area being assessed, your practitioner may need to observe how different parts of your body move.
A simple first-visit checklist
Wear comfortable clothing; bring relevant health information, imaging or reports if available; know your current medications; and think about which movements aggravate your symptoms and what you'd like to get back to doing.
During your assessment
Why assess somewhere other than where it hurts?
The body moves as a connected system. Depending on your presentation, assessment may consider areas beyond the location of your symptoms.
Back Pain
The hips, pelvis and other areas may be considered alongside the spine.
Neck Pain
The shoulders, upper back and surrounding regions may be relevant.
Sciatica
Assessment may include the lower back, pelvis, hips, legs and neurological symptoms.
Your treatment
What does osteopathic treatment feel like?
There isn't one technique used during every appointment.
Osteopathic manual therapy can include soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization, fascial approaches, muscle energy techniques and other hands-on methods. Treatment should be adapted to your presentation and comfort.
Communication matters
You are part of the treatment process.
You should feel comfortable asking what is being assessed, why a technique is being used and what you can expect. If something feels uncomfortable, communicate that with your practitioner.
After your appointment
What happens after treatment?
Your response after an appointment can vary depending on your presentation and techniques used.
Your practitioner may discuss what to expect and provide recommendations related to movement, activity or follow-up care. There is no universal treatment schedule.
